However, putting your faith in data and your analysis of it comes with a fair amount of risk. Dominic Pollard looks at some incidents where big data has gone wrong and examines what can be learnt from these examples.

One of the greatest benefits big data offers is the gift of foresight. By using predictive analytics, an organisation can make sound judgements as to how certain events are likely to unfold. However, relying too heavily on these predictions or taking them at face value could mean you set yourself up for a rather sizeable fall.

With organisations sitting on more and more value-rich data, the ICO has released a need-to-know guide to help with the process of anonymising data sets so they can make more of what they have got.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has released guidelines, mirroring the UK government’s own ‘open data’ principals, to help organisations that are looking to anonymise data sets.
Last week the ICO, the UK’s privacy watchdog that upholds the Data Privacy Act of 1998 which all organisations must adhere to, outlined the risks associated with the anonymisation of data. The public body’s ‘data privacy code of protection’ aims to educate businesses and consumers about individual privacy legislation.

Lingerie retailer increases online conversions by 13% with QuBit customer analysis service.

UK lingerie retailer Bravissimo is set to earn £2.3m extra in revenue after working with the London-based big data specialist QuBit to improve customer experience on its website.

The Leamington Spa-headquartered company – which specialises in bras and swimwear for the bustier lady – received an uplift of its own when it employed QuBit to perform multivariate tests on its online product pages – registering a 13 per cent increase in web sale conversions.
