Silicon Milkroundabout to launch as its own start-up

The leading job fair that has helped recruit countless skilled employees for London's Tech City booming start-up companies is now to become a start-up itself to further its work.

Silicon Milkroundabout, an up until now industry-led jobs fair for London’s ‘Tech City’ companies, has announced today that it is launching as a start-up company itself due to the ever-increasing recruitment demands in the area.

Organisations failing to plan for big data

Despite the purported rise of big data, research suggests storage budgets are falling while many organisations have not roadmapped a big data strategy.

Over half of companies have no big data plans even beyond 2013, according to findings by research service TheInfoPro.

TheInfoPro, a line of service from 451 Research, suggests in its report that the storage industry’s growth is slower than it has been over the last two years. The results are based on extensive interviews with storage professionals and primary decision-makers at large and midsize enterprises in North America and Europe.

A recent competition between innovative start ups saw two big data focussed companies emerge victorious.

Big data companies have been hailed as the greatest innovators as they claim top spot in IBM’s start-up competition.
 
Two big data specialist companies, SkyFoundry and StreetLightData, have been hailed as the greatest US innovators in their field, having won IBM’s SmartCamp Boston competition.

Jason Titus, Shazam: Pitch perfect

For a decade now Shazam, the song identification mobile phone app, has been settling bets, discovering new artists and unearthing guilty pleasures for its users. With over a million and half new users each week, the company’s recent growth has been exponential and its big data analytics have opened a range of new possibilities for expansion. Dominic Pollard visited the company’s London headquarters (that’s right, Shazam is a UK company) to speak to its CTO Jason Titus to find out the magic behind the technology.

A magical experience


For those of you who are unfamiliar with Shazam, it’s a mobile app that allows the user to find out the artist and name of any song they hear. Within just a few seconds, that nagging question of ‘oh, what is this song?’ can be answered with one click of a button. As CTO Jason Titus says, “Shazam is like a unique, magical experience.”

Data centres in demand

With big data on the rise, survey finds that the vast majority of organisations are looking to expand their data centre resources.

Eighty-five per cent of organisations intend to expand their data centre facilities over the coming year, according to the results a survey released last week.
 
Digital Realty, a provider of data centre solutions, announced the findings of its latest survey looking at the European market last week. The survey, undertaken by research firm Campos on behalf of Digital Realty, was conducted among 200 senior decision-makers at European businesses with annual revenues of at least £500m.
