The social media giant opened its doors for one day only to explain to a lucky few how it puts its masses of data to good use.

Facebook has shed light on how it uses the huge amounts of big data at its disposal, during a seminar for tech journalists at its Menlo Park headquarters, California yesterday (22 August).
 
The lucky handful were treated to a presentation by Facebook’s VP of engineering Jay Parikh in which he explained how much data the social media site generates and how the company puts this data to intelligent use.

US big data specialist Karmasphere finds that three fifths of companies don't have Hadoop skills among existing data analysts.

US big data insight specialist firm Karmasphere says a lack of skills is the biggest problem in the market today, based on first hand research it has carried out.

The Cupertino, California–based firm surveyed 376 professionals and found that this shortage of know-how is driving a collaborative self-service approach to carrying out big data tasks, specifically with the Apache Hadoop tool, across companies of all sizes.

For a decade now Shazam, the song identification mobile phone app, has been settling bets, discovering new artists and unearthing guilty pleasures for its users. With over a million and half new users each week, the company’s recent growth has been exponential and its big data analytics have opened a range of new possibilities for expansion. Dominic Pollard visited the company’s London headquarters (that’s right, Shazam is a UK company) to speak to its CTO Jason Titus to find out the magic behind the technology.

A magical experience


For those of you who are unfamiliar with Shazam, it’s a mobile app that allows the user to find out the artist and name of any song they hear. Within just a few seconds, that nagging question of ‘oh, what is this song?’ can be answered with one click of a button. As CTO Jason Titus says, “Shazam is like a unique, magical experience.”

Internet giant releases big data tool to help online advertisers.

The Internet giant Yahoo! has launched Genome, a big data tool for online advertisers and marketers, it was announced this week.
 
Last month we reported that Yahoo! was looking to take advantage of big data analytics to help it improve its own advertising revenue through more targeted marketing campaigns. Now the California-headquartered company is to release a new product, Genome, to allow users to do the same.

Money lender ZestCash claims big data will increase the number of successful applicants by 25 per cent.

ZestCash, an online loan provider, claims that it will be able to lend 25 per cent more money by using a big data-based credit assessment method.

The California-based company, founded by former Google CIO Douglas Merrill, will use data from other creditors such as mobile phone companies and payday lenders to create a more accurate system for determining the outcome of loan applications. By analysing multiple sources of data ZestCash will be able to decide how much to lend an applicant and at what rate.

McAfee to launch new security product using real-time, big data insights.

Computer security specialist McAfee has this week released its new Enterprise Security Manager (ESM), describing the product as ‘big data for security’.
 
The California-headquartered company acquired the security information and event management (SIEM) specialist NitroSecurity in October 2011. McAfee is now using NitroSecurity’s NitroView product as the foundation for ESM.
