Last week marked the launch of big data firm Ayasdi, a Silicon Valley-based outfit that is making ground-breaking developments in the field of data analysis and visualisation through its use of topology.

The company has pioneered the use of algebraic topology – its Insight Discovery Platform – to yield insights out of blind analyses of large and unstructured amounts of data. Whereas previous research methods have necessitated predetermined questions to source answers from complex databases, the use of topology means that data scientists can uncover ‘invisible’ insight.
