The big data revolution is upon us and the time is nigh for the vast majority of organisations to make the necessary preparations to not just survive but thrive in the data driven age. Dominic Pollard looks at some useful tips for getting your house in order for the arrival of big data.

Big data is here, whether we like it or not. It is something which is going to be, and indeed already has been, impacting upon organisations of all shapes and sizes; with the wealth of data now being generated, there is a massive scope for insights and, in turn, competitive advantage. The predictive insights that big data analytics can offer are being heralded as a genuine ‘game changer’ for pretty much any organisation in any sector. However, putting your faith in data and your analysis of it comes with a fair amount of risk. Dominic Pollard looks at some incidents where big data has gone wrong and examines what can be learnt from these examples.

One of the greatest benefits big data offers is the gift of foresight. By using predictive analytics, an organisation can make sound judgements as to how certain events are likely to unfold. However, relying too heavily on these predictions or taking them at face value could mean you set yourself up for a rather sizeable fall.

The world is abuzz with big data. After all there are limitless things you can do with it. But although some people are already maturing with these practical applications, others tell us they are still struggling to join the dots.

Some people say that big data is beyond the realms of normal people’s talents. But surely there’s still a bright future for the old guard? Dominic Pollard explores.

Someone remarked to me recently that most people will struggle to get to grips with big data. Businesses are overlooking big data and trusting gut instinct instead, according to a report by Nesta.

The report, entitled ‘The Rise of the Datavores’, reveals that four out of five companies do not use analytics to make decisions affecting sales, while 43 per cent mostly base decisions on experience and intuition. Only 18 per cent of the 500 businesses surveyed stated that they were ‘data-driven’.
