Gartner: 2013 is big data's year

Latest research by the analyst firm has predicted that big data implementation will dramatically increase over the coming year.

New research by analyst company Gartner has revealed that 42 per cent of firms have already invested in big data or will do so over the rest of the year.


The latest study, part of Gartner’s ‘Big Data, Bigger Opportunities: Investing in Information and Analytics’ report, had led to the claim that 2013 will be ‘big data’s year’.

Big data two to five years from reaching potential

Gartner's latest Hype Cycle report reveals the current expectation levels of big data, as well as 'tipping point technologies' like in-memory analytics and BYOD.

Technology research company Gartner has released the latest update in its Hype Cycles analysis, adding big data, ‘the Internet of Things’ and in-memory computing for the first time.

The Hype Circle is a graph (below) which plots some 1,900 technologies across 92 categories in terms of their benefit maturity. There is an accompanying report for each category.

Big data boosts business analytics market

The hype around big data will help the business analytics market to grow dramatically over the next few years, IDC claims.

Big data hype will help the business analytics market grow to $50.7bn by 2016, according to analyst firm the International Data Corporation (IDC).
 
In its ‘Worldwide Business Analytics Software 2012–2016 Forecast and 2011 Vendor Shares’ report, IDC states that following a 14 per cent growth last year the business analytics software market will continue to grow at an annual rate of 9.8 per cent for the next four years.

Big data is on the cusp of being either a really useful concept – or yet another clumsy marketing buzzword that never quite squares with reality. The first time I heard it, it was obvious that big data was a “retread”. A new word for something that’s been around for a while. Big data, I realised, is just a new word for analytics.

BT offers proprietary visualisation tool to the market

UK telecoms company BT has launched a new big data visualisation product, Assured Analytics – a commercialisation of the tools and techniques that it uses within its own business.

The new tool allows a user to pull multiple big data sets together and utilises a user-friendly interface to allow quick and easy visualisations of the data which can then be used by non technical managers in decision making.
