Big data – the latest business buzz technology – has risen quickly to prominence among British companies but few have been able to produce tangible benefits from it in the early months of adoption, according to a new report released today by Big Data Insight Group.

The report – ‘Understanding the business benefits and strategic implications of big data’ – has been independently produced by Big Data Insight Group and is sponsored by the global information management company EMC. It is led by a survey of 300 senior decision makers in business, finance and IT roles from UK companies, blue chip to SME.

Our independent research has revealed that UK organisations, though showing a clear interest in the subject, are not yet in a position to realise the benefits from big data through their early stage projects. The key findings from the survey were:

  • Already a third of the organisations (33%) surveyed have either implemented or are looking to implement big data projects
  • At this early stage, the majority of organisations (80%) have not quantified the benefits of their projects
  • Nearly half of respondents (47%) said that the ownership of big data initiatives currently sits predominantly with the IT department
  • Less than a quarter of respondents (23%) believe they will require new personnel to execute a big data strategy

The analysis of the survey – the lead feature of the 28-page report – was contributed to by David Boyle, senior vice president of consumer insight, EMI Group & director of consumer insight at zeebox; Chris Roche, senior director, EMC; and Graham Oakes, independent business consultant.

The report also contains:

  • An interview with Jason Titus, CTO of app company Shazam, on creating new revenue streams through big data
  • An interview with David Boyle (EMI/zeebox) on creating effective partnerships with data
  • An editorial feature exploring the democratisation of data, including the benefits this presents and challenges it poses
  • Two expert columns from leading data academics examining the necessary paradigms, skills and personnel required to execute big data
  • A snapshot of leading industry sectors and how they are using big data for competitive advantage
  • Two case studies illustrating how the social media network Tagged and the information management solutions provider doubleIQ have reaped the rewards from adopting big data solutions
